SIDM @ Defence Expo 2018
Day 1: 11 April 2018
SIDM organized a panel discussion, a seminar, and felicitation of women achievers from defence services on Day 1 of DefExpo 2018.
To introspect and discuss why FDI in defence is not gaining traction, in spite of the current government allowing 100?I in defence with Government approval and arrive at some concrete recommendations on how to make it happen, SIDM organised session ‘Changing Headwinds to Tailwinds: Enablers for Enhancing Foreign Direct Investment’ held on 11 April 2018
The session was chaired by Baba N Kalyani, President SIDM and moderated by DG, SIDM. Panellists in the session included Apurva Chandra, Director General (Acquisition) & Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Government of India; Subhash Chandra, Additional Secretary (Defence Production), Ministry of Defence, Government of India; Pratyush Kumar, President, Boeing India; Vincent Gorry, Director, European & Int’l Affairs - ?GIFAS, French Aerospace Industry Association; Jan Widerstrom, Chairman & Managing Director, Saab India Technologies Pvt Ltd and Dr Mukesh Aghi, President & CEO, US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF)
Hon’ble Rajya Raksha Mantri Dr. Subhash Bhamre was the chief guest at the session.
The event managed to put across the viewpoints of the industry from US, France, Sweden and the Indian industry. Point of view of Indian policymakers was enunciated by the DG (Acquisition) and Addl Secretary (DP) and they also took on various questions posed to them. They also took note of the suggestions given by various speakers and the participants.
Officers from the three Defence Services shared their operational experiences and lessons learnt with a view to throw up challenges to the Industry and Academia to come up with high technology solutions in a seminar “Designing Solutions to Battlefield Necessities: The Warrior Speak”
The seminar was chaired by Lt Gen PJS Pannu, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, DCIDS (DOT), HQ IDS. Panelists in the session included Brig YS Ahlawat; Cmdre Sushant Dam; Air Cmdre SK Mohlah, VSM; Col Abhishek Singh; Col Surya Prakash; Col Vibhakar Tyagi
The panel discussion was attended by over 400 persons with a cross-section of participants from the three services, scientists from various universities across the country, industry participants from defence manufacturers and students from IIT Madras and VIT, Chennai.
Felicitation of Women Achievers
SIDM honored 10 women achievers nominated from the three Services by felicitating with Yashaswini 2018 trophies. Gen Bipin Rawat, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, Chief of Army Staff felicitated the women achievers. Details of Women Achievers who were felicitated are as below:

Day 2: 12 April 2018
Special Session with Policy Drivers
On the second day of Defence Expo, 12 April 2018, SIDM organized a session “Defence Production Policy & State Defence Industrial Policies: A Special Session with the Policy Drivers”. The session brought together Secretary (Defence Production) with industrial secretaries from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh to outline perspectives and take questions/suggestions from the audience.
The session was chaired by Jayant D Patil, Vice president, SIDM and moderated by DG, SIDM. Panellists in the session included Dr Rajendra Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary/Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce, Government of Tamil Nadu; Dr Anup Chandra Pandey, IAS, Infrastructure & Industrial Development Commissioner, Government of Uttar Pradesh; P A Praveen, Director, Aerospace & Industries, Government of Telangana; Mr Sanjay Jaju, IAS, Joint Secretary (DIP), Dept. of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, Government of India
The event managed to put across the viewpoints of the policymakers from the MoD to the states like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where the defence corridors are coming up, to the hub states like Telangana. Views of Indian industry were enunciated by SIDM office bearers. Secretary (DP) also brought out changes that are being made in the MoD on policy matters especially concerning exports and level playing field to the private players. This was aptly also brought out and enunciated by Shri Sanjay Jaju, IAS too, who was quite forthcoming in his views. They also took note of the suggestions given by various speakers and the participants.
